SCIENCE…. THE HUMINITARIAN SERVER
Sruthi Nair - 8A (Creative workshop)

Admittedly, science has an enormous influence on our lives. Modern science and technology have changed our lives so in many dramatic ways.

So, what is science? The dictionary meaning of 'Science' is 'the observation, identification, description, experimental investigation and theoretical explanation of phenomena'. We all know that science covers the wide field of knowledge that deals with observed facts and the relationships of these facts. Science has also greatly affected the way we view the world around us and ourselves.
And, who are 'scientists'? They are those who study a wide variety of science-related subjects. Some scientists study the structure of molecules while some others learn about the origin of the universe. But in whatever field they work, all scientists explore the working of the world. Scientific theories consist of general principles or laws that attempt to explain how or why something happens or has happened. Science advances as scientists accumulate more detailed facts and gain a better understanding of these fundamental principles and laws. Scientific progress depends on new ideas expanding or replacing old ones. Science also differs from other types of knowledge like art, philosophy etc. in that it values the proving of an idea that would have been born as a theory. A theory developed by a scientist cannot be accepted as part of scientific knowledge until it has been verified by the studies of other researchers. In fact, for any knowledge to be truly scientific it must be repeatedly tested experimentally and found to be true. And there lies the beauty of science's authenticity.
Science addresses a range of dimensions, time and space, notwithstanding. Scientific progress is faster today than ever before. The science of today and tomorrow promises to continue to improve our understanding of the universe and give us even greater control over nature. It continuously helps us in combating illness and diseases, both physical and mental. But at the same time serious debates have arisen over some science related issues on whether it is moral to interfere in the genetic makeup of a human being or to use lasers for destructive purposes. In the future, scientists and non-scientists alike will have an increasing responsibility to ensure that the best possible advantages to humanity comprises knowledge gained from verified scientific research.
What inspires me most towards science are the related articles that appear in the magazines and books I frequently read. My parents have simultaneously encouraged and inspired me a lot, for me to be inclined to the subject.
I truly feel that knowledge of science has been a prime mover in assisting humanity to grow to the extent that it has, it is and is continuously growing to the extent it will be. Hopefully, some day I wish to be a scientist who serves a cause that addresses the problems of future generations and mine…take me into your arms...'science'.
